Parallel Coordinates: Visual Multidimensional Geometry and its Applications

When: Thursday, 31 May 2018, 16:00 - 17:30

Abstract: with parallel coordinates, the perceptual barrier imposed by our 3-dimensional habitation is breached enabling the visualization of multidimensional spaces and problems. In this tutorial, a panorama of highlights from the foundations to the most recent results, interlaced with applications, are intuitively developed. The parallel coordinates methodology is used in collision avoidance and conflict resolution algorithms in air traffic control (3 USA patents), computer vision (USA patent), data mining (USA patent) for data exploration and automatic classification, optimization, process control and elsewhere. Parallel coordinates are included in hundreds of commercial and free software and are taught in numerous courses.

Bio: Alfred received a Ph. D. in Mathematics and Physics from the University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana) and continued as Research Professor at the Biological Computer Laboratory there working on Neural Networks, Cognition, Population Dynamics and Models of Complex Nonlinear Systems. He then held senior research positions at IBM where he developed a Mathematical Model of the Ear(Cochlea) (TIME Nov. 74) and later Collision-Avoidance Algorithms for Air Traffic Control (3 USA patents). Concurrently he had joint appointments at UCLA, USC, Technion and Ben Gurion University. Since 1995 AI is Professor at the School of Mathematical Sciences of Tel Aviv University. He was elected Senior Fellow at the San Diego Supercomputing Center in 1996, Distinguished Visiting Professor at Korea University in 2008, and National University of Singapore in 2011. He invented and developed the multidimensional visualization methodology of Parallel Coordinates for which he received numerous patents and awards. His textbook on "Parallel Coordinates: VISUAL Multidimensional Geometry", was published by Springer and praised by Stephen Hawking among many others.

Introduction to Visual Analytics for Cyber-Security

When: Thursday, 31 May 2018, 16:00 - 17:30

Abstract: Modern day activities are more and more executed by computers, where the security of the information exchanged and the needs for keeping operational the services constitute mandatory needs. The continuous integration of automatic solutions in all the human activities had as a side effect the proliferation of cyber-threats. The constant raising of cyber-incidents and cyber-threats, both in cardinality and variety, constitute a never-ending menace, where the task of the cyber-defendant become more and more difficult to accomplish, due to the heterogeneity of tasks and the sheer amount of involved data to monitor. Visual Analytics has proved to be a valid support for cyber defendants in identification of potential cyber-menaces, comprehension of the involved data and projection of future course of actions in order to stop or mitigate the cyber-menaces. This tutorial has the goal of introducing the application of Visual Analytics paradigms to the field of Cyber-security, highlighting peculiar aspects that need to be taken into consideration that differentiate the field of Cyber-security from all the others domains in which Visual Analytics finds application, when designing a Cyber Visual Aanlytics solution and providing insights on future trends and challenges of this discipline. The tutorial will additionally provide actual use cases prototypes analysis and usage, derived from previous experiences and from different contexts of application.

Bio: Marco Angelini is a postdoc in Engineering in Computer Science at Sapienza UniversitĂ  di Roma; he is co-founder of the A.W.A.RE group (Advanced Visualization and Visual Analytics Research group). He is a researcher in the Centre for Cyber-Intelligence and Security of Sapienza, and member of CINI Cyber Security National Lab, where he participated in several projects, including the EU FP-7 project PANOPTESEC, about automatic detection, management and reaction to cyber-threats for Critical Infrastructures protection. His main research interests include Visual analytics, the process of combining visualization of information, interaction by user and analytical computation for solving heavy computational problems and Cyber-Security, focused on designing solutions for cyber-defense of critical infrastructures, open-source intelligence and malware analysis. As a result of his activities, Marco Angelini has published more than 30 papers in international conferences and journal.
